Tile offers a versatile aesthetic, incredible durability, and premium performance. Homeowners love tile flooring, but not all products are created equally. Depending on your project, the differences between ceramic and porcelain tiles could significantly impact longevity; find out how these two materials stack up and which may be better for your application.
What Is the Difference Between Porcelain and Ceramic Tile?
Porcelain and ceramic tile are the most common types of tile flooring available, and they’re popular picks for backsplashes, showers and baths, and outdoor applications too. While nearly indistinguishable at a glance, there are some key differences in how composition and manufacturing set these materials apart.
What Is Porcelain Tile Made Of?
Porcelain tile is made from fine, dense clay with a substantial amount of feldspar. Porcelain is fired at very high temperatures of over 2,200° Fahrenheit, resulting in an extremely dense, durable tile. Its density makes it extremely hard to dent or scratch; most tile contractors use a wet saw and diamond blade to achieve smooth, clean edges.
Porcelain’s density also makes it highly water resistant, absorbing roughly 0.5% of surface moisture. It’s virtually waterproof, although tile flooring requires expert installation and the right grout to offer complete protection against leaks, spills, or recurring water exposure.
What Is Ceramic Tile Made Of?
Ceramic tiles are made of coarser clay materials. Most ceramic tiles are fired at lower temperatures compared to porcelain, usually between 1,600° and 1,700° Fahrenheit. The result is a dense tile that remains scratch, dent, and stain-resistant, although not quite at the level of porcelain. Ceramic tile is also more porous, with a water absorption rate of 3% to 7%, depending on the product.
Is Ceramic or Porcelain Tile Better for Floors?
Both types of tile are durable, beautiful options for areas of the home with consistent water exposure or a high risk of spills or leaks. In most cases, however, porcelain tiles are the tougher, superior choice.
When to Choose Porcelain Tile
When to Choose Ceramic Tile
- Low traffic areas (bedrooms, home offices)
- Walls (backsplashes, shower walls)
- When budget matters (ceramic is typically less expensive)
Why Porcelain Is Premium
Porcelain tile flooring is usually more expensive per square foot than ceramic, largely due to its more selective material. Porcelain has higher kaolin and feldspar content, which is less readily available. Additionally, the higher firing temperatures result in elevated energy costs and the specialty tools and adhesives required to install porcelain also contribute to higher costs.
