Find the Perfect Carpet for Your Home

The right carpet depends on you and how you live — who you live with, what rooms you have, and what kind of lifestyle you lead. Here's what to consider before your Design Associate visits.

Best Carpet for Bedrooms

It's warm underfoot when you get out of bed in the morning, absorbs sound to help create a quieter, more restful space, and gives the room a soft, comfortable feel. Plush and cut pile carpets are popular choices for bedrooms, while homeowners with allergies may prefer a hypoallergenic carpet designed to reduce allergen buildup.

Your Design Associate can bring bedroom carpet samples to your home so you can see exactly how they look in your space.

Best Carpet for Pets

For our customers with furry friends at home, we’d always recommend stain-resistant carpet — it’s that peace of mind for little accidents or when your more outdoorsy pet brings you a gift.

Our carpets with nylon or polyester fabrics hold up the best and are the easiest to clean, but any carpet with solution-dyed fibers will stand up to pet stains.

A low-pile carpet is a great option for pet owners as they are more durable, easier to vacuum, and helps remove pet hair and dander more effectively than higher-pile styles.

Best Carpet for High-Traffic Areas

Every home has its high-traffic areas — typically hallways, stairs, family rooms and entryways — and these zones especially benefit from durability. For the best long-term performance, we recommend a low-pile carpet or nylon loop pile (Berber), as nylon fibers are especially resilient in busy areas. These carpet styles hold up well under heavy foot traffic and are also some of the best options for stairs, as their tight construction helps minimize the appearance of footprints and wear over time.

Choosing the Right Floors for Your Home

Our expert-guided, easy-to-follow Flooring Guide was designed to help you explore your options with clarity and confidence, all while staying true to your lifestyle, budget, and design preferences.

Types of Carpet We Install

We carry a wide range of carpet types to suit every home and lifestyle — here’s a quick overview of our most popular options.

Cut Pile Carpet

A cut pile carpet is just that — a carpet where the pile has been cut at the tips, rather than looping around in a loop pile. Cut pile carpets are the most common type of carpets, and include plush carpets and frieze carpets.

Their soft feel and wide range of styles mean they’re ideally suited to bedrooms and living rooms, although you may find that you notice footprints more in a cut pile than in a loop pile.

Loop Pile Carpet

A loop pile carpet is one in which the fibers form continuous loops that come out of and return to the base, rather than being cut at the tips.

Loop pile carpets are very durable, hiding both footprints and wear marks well; this makes these carpets ideal for high-traffic areas like hallways, stairs, family rooms and entryways.

Berber is a popular style of loop pile, and it’s often designed with flecks of color for some subtle visual interest.

Plush Carpet

Plush carpet is a kind of cut pile carpet that’s luxuriously soft and dense. This premium comfort carpet is best suited to bedrooms and formal living spaces, giving a plushness and elegance underfoot.

Because this style of carpet is so thick and luxuriant, it does show footprints and vacuum marks more than other carpets, and we wouldn’t recommend it for high-traffic areas.

Frieze Carpet

Frieze carpet is made from fibers that have been highly twisted for a textured-yet-casual appearance, which has a more relaxed vibe than plush. Also called twist-pile carpet, it is a modern, refined version of the 70s shag carpet.

The unique makeup of this carpet style means it’s particularly adept at hiding footprints and wear marks, and it's ideal for busy households with children or pets.

Nylon Carpet

Nylon carpet is one of the most durable carpet fibers available, making it an excellent choice for busy households and high-traffic areas like hallways, stairs, and family rooms. Many nylon carpets also feature stain-resistant treatments and resist fading over time, helping them maintain their appearance for years.

While nylon typically costs more than polyester, its durability and long-term performance make it a worthwhile investment for many homeowners.

Polyester Carpet

Polyester carpet offers a soft, comfortable feel underfoot at a budget-friendly price, making it a popular choice for bedrooms, guest rooms, and other lower-traffic spaces. It has natural resistance to many common household stains, though oil-based stains can be more difficult to remove.

While polyester isn't as resilient as nylon in high-traffic areas, it's an excellent option for homeowners seeking comfort and value.

Olefin / Polypropylene Carpet

Olefin carpet, also known as polypropylene carpet, is a fantastic option for basements or subterranean rooms thanks to its moisture-resistant properties. Furthermore, its color is solution-dyed, so it inherently has good stain resistance.

The material isn’t quite as soft underfoot as nylon, so we wouldn’t recommend it for those spaces that demand comfort, like bedrooms.

Carpets That Last— Backed by Expert Care

Is It Time to Replace Your Carpet?

A well-made carpet will last for years, depending on its quality, how heavily it’s used and how well it's maintained. There will eventually come a time when it needs to be replaced, and here are the signs you should look out for.

If your carpet looks matted or flattened and no longer springs back, it may have reached the end of its lifespan. Persistent odors that won’t budge despite cleaning, stubborn stains that won't come out, or even allergy symptoms that are worse at home are also clear signs that it's time for a new carpet.

A lot of people also choose to replace their carpet when they move into a new home — starting with fresh flooring creates a cleaner, more comfortable space and lets you make the home your own before you even unpack.

If your carpet’s got significant water damage, replacement is often the safest option to prevent mold and lingering moisture issues.

Carpet After Water Damage

Water damage can permanently affect your carpet, even if it looks dry on the surface. Moisture can become trapped in the carpet padding, creating ideal conditions for mold and mildew to grow. Replacing the carpet and padding is the safest, most effective solution, and it’s best to do this sooner rather than later.

If your carpet’s been damaged by a leak, flood, or burst pipe, Floor Coverings International® can come to your home with carpet samples, give you a transparent, down-to-the-penny quote and handle the installation.

With local teams across the US and Canada, you can quickly find your nearest location by entering your ZIP code and schedule an in-home consultation to get your flooring back to its best.
