A cut pile carpet is just that — a carpet where the pile has been cut at the tips, rather than looping around in a loop pile. Cut pile carpets are the most common type of carpets, and include plush carpets and frieze carpets.
Their soft feel and wide range of styles mean they’re ideally suited to bedrooms and living rooms, although you may find that you notice footprints more in a cut pile than in a loop pile.
A loop pile carpet is one in which the fibers form continuous loops that come out of and return to the base, rather than being cut at the tips.
Loop pile carpets are very durable, hiding both footprints and wear marks well; this makes these carpets ideal for high-traffic areas like hallways, stairs, family rooms and entryways.
Berber is a popular style of loop pile, and it’s often designed with flecks of color for some subtle visual interest.

Carpeting is sold per square foot, typically from $1 to $6. Carpet padding is usually sold separately and may cost between $0.50 and $2 per square foot. During your in-home consultation, your Design Associate will provide a detailed estimate based on your choice of carpet, the square footage required, and carpet removal and installation costs, if applicable. Hypoallergenic carpet is designed to reduce the presence of allergens in your home, protecting those with respiratory conditions like asthma or allergies. It uses materials like nylon and polyester that are resistant to mold, mildew, and dust.
Carpet made of materials with reduced volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are commonly found in glues, fabrics, and other manufactured materials, are considered low VOC. Low VOC carpeting reduces off-gassing or the emission of chemicals. Many hypoallergenic carpets are also low VOC.
A cut pile carpet has fibers that are cut at the top, while the fibers on a loop pile carpet loop around from the base and go back into it. Cut pile carpets are generally more comfortable underfoot, while loop pile carpets are more durable and are better suited for high-traffic areas.
