Choose the right hardness. The harder the stone, the less you’ll need to worry about scratches and wear. Granite is the hardest stone flooring material, while marble serves as a more than adequate middle ground. Limestone and travertine are softer sedimentary rocks best reserved for lower-traffic areas of the home.
Choose the right water-resistance. High-porosity rocks like sandstone are more porous and absorb more water. They rely on sealers (often applied every few years) to prevent staining. Low-porous rocks like slate and granite are denser and don’t absorb water, making them superior options for bathrooms and other wet areas.
Choose the right stone floor finish. While you can’t change the stone's natural color, choosing a polished, honed, or brushed finish will significantly alter its appearance.
