Learn More»Hardwood flooring is part of the character of many Auburn, Maine homes. Older houses from the city’s shoe-making era may still have original wood under later flooring, and newer homes often want that same warmth in living and dining rooms.
That gives you two paths. Hardwood floor refinishing can bring original floors back and keep character that’s hard to reproduce. If you’re starting fresh, solid hardwood and engineered hardwood flooring come in a wide range of species, stains and finishes.
Floor Coverings International® brings the Mobile Flooring Showroom® to your door, so you can see those species and stains next to your own trim. If you have wood worth saving, your Design Associate will look at it and tell you whether refinishing or replacing makes more sense.
Schedule Your Free In-Home ConsultationMaine’s seasons are the main thing to plan for. Heated winters dry the air and summers bring humidity back, so engineered hardwood, with real wood on top of a more stable core, is often the practical choice. It can also go where solid hardwood can’t, including basements and concrete slabs. Small gaps in a dry winter are normal and close again as humidity returns, and keeping indoor humidity within the manufacturer’s range helps any wood floor perform its best.
A few more things worth asking about:
In many cases, yes. Your Design Associate looks at the existing floor during your Free In-Home Consultation and tells you whether refinishing makes sense.
Often, yes. It depends on the thickness of the top wear layer: thicker layers can be sanded and refinished more times, and very thin ones can only be recoated.
Wood adjusts to the moisture level in your home. Giving it time to do that before installation reduces the risk of gaps or warping later.
Sweep or dust-mop often, and clean with a hardwood cleaner on a damp (not wet) microfiber mop. Avoid steam mops, wet mopping, vinegar and oil soaps, and follow your floor manufacturer’s care guide.
Whether you want to restore an original floor or install new hardwood, request a Free In-Home Consultation and your Design Associate will talk through the best approach for your home.
