South Alabama’s unrelenting humidity and the daily risk of spills, leaks, and other forms of water damage put real strain on your home. If you’re remodeling a moisture-prone area of your home, such as a bathroom, kitchen, or laundry room, choosing a cost-effective type of waterproof flooring can significantly reduce the risk of expensive repairs or replacement later on.

Explore different types of waterproof flooring and where to install these materials for long-term protection.

Waterproof vs. Water-resistant Flooring: What’s the Difference?

Some flooring brands use the terms “water-resistant” and “waterproof” interchangeably, but there are specific differences between them.

  • Waterproof flooring is impervious to water damage, even over prolonged periods. They do not absorb water or posture and typically use a stone or synthetic core material.
  • Water-resistant flooring will withstand incidental water exposure (think spills and minor leaks) for a short time before eventually absorbing the liquid. These typically use wood-based core materials, which are hydrophilic and will absorb moisture.

There are a few types of flooring that are particularly high-risk when exposed to water. Carpet and wood flooring have plenty of positive qualities and deserve a place in your home (think bedrooms and living spaces) but are highly susceptible to damage with even limited water exposure.

Types of Waterproof Flooring

There are a few highly waterproof flooring options to consider, and, fortunately for Foley, Daphne, and nearby communities, they run the full spectrum of colors, textures, and price points. Laminate, vinyl, and tile flooring are exceptional options; here’s why.

Is Laminate Flooring Waterproof?

While not all laminate flooring products are waterproof, options with Stone Plastic Composite (SPC) are rated as waterproof by the manufacturer. SPC cores are rigid, dent and stain-resistant, and designed to last for years with minimal maintenance.

Examples of waterproof laminate flooring include Shaw Floors’ Oak Crest, Oak Grove, and Mauna options.

Is Vinyl Flooring Waterproof?

Most luxury vinyl plank and luxury vinyl tile products are waterproof, though it is important to confirm with your Design Associate. Like laminate, waterproof vinyl flooring benefits from an SPC core that withstands water exposure without damage.

Popular examples of waterproof vinyl flooring include Mohawk’s SolidTech collection, which includes the Plus, Select, and Essential line-ups to provide a wide range of solutions at diverse price points.

Is Tile Flooring Waterproof?

Ceramic and porcelain tile are both effectively waterproof. Tile has a water absorption rate of less than 1%, which means it can withstand total submersion for hours without issue. The quality of installation is key, however, because tile flooring is only as waterproof as the grout and adhesive used. We always recommend having your tile floors professionally installed to ensure they are truly waterproof.

Where You Really Need Waterproof Flooring

Waterproof flooring products tend to be more expensive than water-resistant alternatives. As such, it doesn’t always make sense to install waterproof flooring in low-risk areas of the home, such as bedrooms, home offices, or most living spaces.

We do recommend waterproofing flooring for:

  • Bathrooms
  • Entryways
  • Kitchens
  • Laundry rooms
  • Mudrooms
  • Utility rooms

Every home is unique, and it’s important to consider your property’s history and your own personal habits when choosing the right materials.

  • For high-risk areas, especially those with a history of leaks or plumbing problems, choose tile or luxury vinyl.
  • For lower-risk areas prone to spills, consider vinyl or laminate.
