How to Choose a Good Carpet
There are many different types of carpet out there, which means the right material, color, and design is out there waiting for you! If the number of carpet options seems overwhelming, start by examining your unique needs. For a personalized carpet recommendation, contact Floor Coverings International® of Regina for a consultation
1. Think Traffic
High-traffic areas of the home call for durable, tough carpet that can withstand plenty of foot traffic and a steady sprinkling of dirt and debris. Opt for nylon or Triexta fibers, which tend to be more durable and resistant to crushing. Most multi-toned patterned carpets help camouflage wear and hide dirt!
Lower traffic areas of the home offer more flexibility. For bedrooms and more formal living spaces, wool, polyester, and softer nylons are luxurious, comforting options.
2. Fiber Matters
Nylon and Triexta fibers are tough, stain-resistant, and resistant to fading. They are some of the best carpet materials for busy homes, especially those with kids and pets (more on that later). Polyester (PET) is less resilient than either option, although it is exceptionally resistant to stains and typically more affordable. Finally, you’ll also find natural carpet materials, such as wool. Soft, durable, and eco-friendly, wool generally is more expensive than other options and requires specific cleaning techniques.
3. Pile
Pile refers to the way carpet fibers look and feel.
High-pile carpet has long, loosely packed fibers that are incredibly soft and cushioning. Homeowners also appreciate its insulating properties, especially in Spokane’s long, cold winters. The longer fibers can be hard to clean, especially if stains have time to set.
Low-pile carpet features short, closely packed fibers that can’t easily be crushed. While less luxurious and cozy than high-pile carpet, low-pile carpet is much easier to clean and is better for individuals with allergies or underlying respiratory conditions.
What Is the Best Carpet Material for Pets?
Roughly 66% of Americans have at least one pet, which means Fido plays a big role in selecting flooring. While no carpet is entirely “pet-proof,” some materials are better options than others.
For pet-friendly carpeting, look for these materials:
- Triexta: Known as SmartStrand by Mohawk, Triexta is incredibly stain-resistant. It doesn’t absorb liquid and won’t stain. Since it won’t absorb liquid, pet odors don’t linger; it’s like your pet’s accident never happened.
- Nylon: Most (but not all) nylon carpet fiber is treated with a stain-resistant coating. Unlike Triexta, however, stains will set in if not cleaned up quickly, causing long-term damage.
Finally, look for cut-pile carpet, if possible. Cut-pile means the ends of the fibers are cut, making it harder for claws to snag on loops, which can hurt your pet and damage your carpet. Low-pile is best because it won’t trap pet hair, and it’s much easier to clean.
