Vinyl vs. Linoleum Flooring

We carry versatile and lovely vinyl flooring options.

If you’re looking to install new floors in your home, you may wonder what the differences are between vinyl and linoleum flooring. Many people think that these products are the same or confuse the products for each other. They are similar in that they are both durable, attractive, and cost-effective options that are versatile enough to be used in various rooms throughout your house. However, these are different products, each with its advantages and disadvantages. Get informed about your flooring options and choose the best one for your needs and preferences.

Here is a little more information about what the key differences are between vinyl flooring and linoleum flooring:

Composition

The key differences between the two are the materials used and the way the materials come together to create the product. Linoleum flooring is made from natural materials, including linseed oil, limestone, cork and wood flour, and pine rosin. These materials are mixed together and then laid on a jute backing to create a linoleum flooring sheet. On the other hand, vinyl flooring is made from synthetic materials, such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC) resin. It has three parts: a core, an image layer, and a finish layer. The image layer is the design that shows through and is placed on top of the core layer. It’s adhered to by the finish layer, typically made of resin that protects the floor from damage.

Durability

Another reason they’re distinct is their respective durability. More homeowners choose vinyl flooring rolls because they’re waterproof and more resistant to scratches, stains, dents, and dings than linoleum. This makes it an excellent choice for households that have pets, kids, or heavy foot traffic in their homes. Even so, rolled linoleum flooring is an exceptionally long-lasting material that can withstand regular use as long as it is taken care of properly. It has water-resistant qualities that make it a good option for areas with exposure to moisture, especially when you apply a sealant to it from time to time. With regular sweeping and mopping, they can both stay in good condition for many years, which makes them a great flooring option for any home.

Style And Color Options

The final difference is the style and color options available. Sheet vinyl flooring has an incredibly detailed and realistic-looking image layer that allows it to replicate the characteristics of natural stone, tile, or wood grain. Whereas linoleum sheet flooring styles are more traditional and less versatile than their vinyl counterpart. Many homeowners prefer the options available with vinyl flooring, but there are still plenty of custom design and color options for those who choose to install linoleum flooring.
